Bride and Groom's Toasts

Irene Isaacson is more than just a friend to me. In fact, she's more than just a best friend. Irene, that's what I call her, is really the sister I never had. We've been this close for over 15 years, ever since our university days, when we waitressed together at a place called The Cactus Club.

There 's so much I can say about Irene…where do I start? Well, maybe with this: With my friend Irene, what you see is not necessarily what you get. What I mean is that she's, as you can see, blonde, cute, lovely and an altogether bubby 100-pound girl of great spirit -- who happens to work as a parole officer dealing exclusively with sex offenders! The point is this: Under that sweet, adorable, beautiful exterior lies the soul of one tough, determined and altogether capable woman.

But there's so much more. I don't know anybody who has a sense of adventure like Irene's. Put a road less traveled before her and I bet you she'll take it…every time.

Irene has been to Europe often, for instance. Once, when I was in Kiev in the Ukraine and Irene was in Budapest, she thought nothing about hopping aboard a train to visit me. It was no big deal at all for her -- just your typical 36-hour train trip. As Irene tells it, she was stuck in a compartment with two Russians and a Hungarian, none of whom could speak a word of English. Well, by the end of the trip, though some magical experience that included a lot of homemade wine, they had all become great friends. That's Irene.

Irene's wanderlust is matched, by the way, by Sam's. They both love to travel, and I'm sure they'll see many new and exciting parts of the world…as man and wife. And during their brief periods between trips, when they're at home here in Vancouver, you can probably find them in Stanley Park, rollerblading and doing the "Grouse Grind."

Irene is exuberance personified. In fact, she could probably give the Energizer Bunny a transfusion if it ever runs down. She's also the eternal optimist, the one who's glass is always half full, and who savors the joy of life every golden day.

There's one more thing I'd like to add here. Irene is the fifth of five children. With three older brothers and an older sister, Irene was the baby of the Isaacson clan. So I have to believe that this occasion is monumental, not just for Irene but for her dear folks and all of her siblings. Because the "baby" is getting married.

As I said before, Irene Isaacson is my dearest friend; truly, she's my sister. And I'm thrilled beyond words to be Irene's maid of honor. It really IS an honor. And I'm filled with love for Irene, and thrilled for Irene and Sam alike.

Irene, sister, you are truly beautiful in all ways, inside and out. My wish for you and Sam is a long life of good health, much prosperity and plenty of joy in all kinds of ways. If anybody deserves a beautiful life like that, it's a beautiful person like you.
